I first saw Godfrey Johnson live about six years ago and absolutely fell in love with his great voice and musical style. So when I heard he was coming back to Cape Town to perform his new show, ‘Johnson Unzipped’, at the Kalk Bay Theatre, I was pretty excited!

The Kalk Bay Theatre, of course, is one of the coolest foodie theatres around, as it boasts a beautiful restaurant above the stage area, so you can wine and dine, and then head on downstairs to watch the show. I had been planning on dining at the theatre before the show but, long story short, ended up with a wrong turn and went on an hour-long roundabout trip to make it to the theatre, so needless to say there wasn’t enough time. But there was still time for wine, so all ended well.

And, of course, then we got to see Godfrey perform. It’s a one-man musical performance, though I’m tempted to say it’s a full-on theatre show in itself. Godrey plays the piano, mesmerises the audience with his stunning voice, and entertains the house with various story lines and characters he has created. He’s absolutely hilarious on stage. I spent half the night in stitches laughing at his awkward but well-suited style and half the night in absolute awe at some of the songs he was singing.

In this show Godfrey introduces various South African characters with their unique musical talents, which is where most of the laughs come in, and then astounds the audience with performances of songs by classic masters like David Bowie, Billy Joel, and Leonard Cohen. My favourites? His renditions of Billy Joel’s ‘Piano Man’, Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, and one of the made-up character songs (I won’t share too much here so you can be surprised when you go see).

Tickets are priced at R125 each, though on Tuesday you’ll get a two-for-one deal. Seating is first-come-first-serve, but diners do get first pick, so I’d absolutely recommend that (plus, it’s food). For more information on the show and to get your hands on some tickets, visit the official Kalk Bay Theatre website. For more info on Godfrey Johnson, check him out on Facebook, Twitter, or SoundCloud.

Enjoy! We’ll see you next week for more foodie goodness!
